Im working full time to keep the family together and the mortgage paid and my husband who was made redundent a few months ago has seen on the internet that you can use a family car to do courier work in delivering laptops and valuable thing is this true? I need him out working but we can’t afford to throw time and money away on things that will never work. He’s a good man and decent and honest and knows his way round the country. I just need to know if its pie in the sky. Thanks Tess.

Hi Tess
People call me and ask me this question a lot.
I would first of all say that I personally have met lots of people who have successfully started off doing courier work in a car. So it is possible. The downsides are that some courier companies insist on a van, and there is some stuff you can’t carry, so it cuts down on the work you can do.
Also, it wears the car out faster than you can believe.
You may also find it slightly harder to get goods in transit insurance and “courier insurance” (to drive legally when delivering) in a car than a van. Just need to shop around more.
The good part about starting in the car is that it is less of a hassle if you decide you don’t like it, or you can’t make a go of it. Another way round this is to rent a van when you need one. Above all don’t sign a long term finance or rental deal.
So it indeed possible, but everyone I know who has started as a courier in a car has got themselves a van pretty quickly.
However, beware of companies offering you expensive manuals, CDs, DVDs, and other stuff to show you how to deliver laptops etc. It looks too good to be true, and therefore it is usually too good to be true. The work doesn’t exist, and the manuals are full of stuff that’s all free on the internet anyway.
Hope this helps. Feel free to post another question any time.
