If you’re look at becoming a courier, it’s courier work you need to get started. So you’ll need to look at all possible sources of work, courier companies, local companies using couriers, courier work exchange sites, and nowadays there are also websites that allow “end users”, ie the actual customer, to list work for couriers to quote for.
There are others, but a good example is DeliverySupermarket.com, which is a sister site to mtvan.com. The difference between them is that on mtvan.com the work is generally trade only; ie for couriers to sell work to couriers.
(Just to...
Here’s another one to look into:
CRV
At least one of their franchisees is on mtvan.com.
This franchise has recently come to our attention, though as yet we have no specific knowledge of it.
PayPound Express Owner Driver Franchise
If you find anything you’d like to share (or ask about), please come back to us here on Tony;s Guide.
And of course make sure you speak to at least two actual current franchisees before deciding it’s for you.
If you’re doing your research into starting out as a courier, you will want to hear the opinions of people already in the courier industry, as well as those of people in your situation.
You have to use your common sense, obviously, as not everything you read will actually be sensible or even true. You’ll hear a lot of established couriers telling you they’re starving to death, in a rather lame attempt to stop new people coming in to compete them.
Generally, as with most things on the internet, the more of a rant a post seems to be, the less notice you should take of it.

+++ STOP PRESS +++ COURIER WORK ALERT +++
There are opportunities at YODEL depots around the UK at the moment, as they work to handle the 2011 Chriistmas rush.
If you have a van or suitable car, they are offering £150 a day at some of their depots.
There is a lot of work available: Check it out by joining mtvan.com (free) to see the contact details you need on this page.
This depends entirely on your own circumstances, and on what you are trying to achieve.
A lot of people ask me if I think it will work if they try to set up part time, at least to start with, to see how it goes before deciding to, for example, leave their current job. This plan does have the upside of doing least damage to your current lifestyle before you decide whether or not to commit full-time. There are however two problems with it.
First, your customers, whether they’re courier companies or general businesses, are generally working hardest during the normal working week, ie just when you...
If you’re hoping to make a living as an owner-driver courier, the best way to start is to find work for a while with courier companies in your area. This page will help you know what they expect. Many courier companies are nervous about taking on beginners, so you need to set yourself up properly, to give yourself the best chance of getting work and getting earning.
Courier companies need couriers like you to carry out the work, so it’s the obvious place to start. Once you have learned the ropes working for a single courier company as an owner driver, you can, if you want, go out and get courier...
In the old days, and I mean before-fax-machines-came-along sort of old days, you could set up a courier company with just a pen, a reporter’s notebook, an ashtray and a kettle for the couriers, an old van to do some of the deliveries in, and a typewriter for the invoicing. A few cards around local offices, and you’d soon be delivering urgent letters for local businesses.
How times have changed.
Since then, the same day courier industry has had to adapt to survive many changes.
Email has replaced the courier for pretty much any correspondence that the fax machine hadn’t already accounted for, and...
When looking for business in your area, start with mailshots. You can use a combination of postcards, letters and emails.
Postcards are effective, because they can attract more attention, but can be more time consuming. They can be addressed by hand, unless you can get hold of good address labels. Don’t be distracted by the need to get all set up with a database and a pc and labels; better to get stuck in by writing out a few hundred addresses by hand. If you are already equipped with the right stuff on your pc, all well and good.
Your postcard can say something simple like this:
are a same day...
Letters can be vary according to the sort of customer you are aiming at, but here’s an example. As you will see, it is a letter to send as a follow-up to a phone conversation. Perhaps after you have sent a mailshot, and followed it up with a phone call.
You have to push yourself do all of this, including the phone calls, as just sending out letters, or any kind of mailshot, is pointless. It makes you feel like you’re doing some sales, but without sales phone calls, sending mailshots never, ever, produces any results.
