Start bigger than the water at your feet
The first mistake is reading only the launch. Ramps and small coves are often chosen because they are protected. That makes them convenient, but it also means they may hide the wind and waves waiting around the first point.
Before I look at the surface beside me, I ask which arm I am on, where that arm opens up and which direction the longest stretch of water runs. On a map, that open stretch is the place where wind has room to build waves. On shore, it is the part I need to see or think through before committing.

Let the land explain the water
A point sticks into the lake and separates one pocket of water from another. A hollow cuts back into the land and may offer shelter. A bluff usually means the bank—and often the underwater slope—drops more sharply than a gentle-looking wooded edge.
I use those shapes to form a question, not an answer. Will this point block the wind or funnel it? Does that narrow cove have an easy exit? Could deep water sit close to this rock face? A current chart, local markers and direct observation still outrank the guess.

Watch the wind write on the surface
Wind becomes visible when smooth water darkens, ripples begin to march, streaks form or small waves start showing white. I also look at flags, smoke and treetops, because a protected shoreline can leave the nearby surface deceptively quiet.
The longer the wind blows across open water, the more room waves have to develop. That open distance is called fetch. You do not need to remember the word; remember the effect. A route can feel comfortable in the lee of a point and rough the moment you clear it. Turning back early is good judgment, not a failed outing.

Color and debris are clues, not verdicts
After rain, tributaries may carry sediment and create a visible line where cloudier water meets clearer water. Shade, depth, bottom type, algae and even the reflected sky can also change color. I never use color alone to declare water clean, dirty, deep or safe.
Floating sticks and leaves tell a simpler story: something has moved. A branch may extend far below the piece you can see, and debris can collect in bands after runoff or shifting wind. Slow down and give it space, especially near a ramp, narrow arm or shaded shoreline.

The bank remembers where the water has been
Look for a dark wet band on rock, a line of leaves or sticks, newly exposed mud, or vegetation that begins above a certain height. Those marks can show recent water levels. A ramp is useful too: more or less concrete showing at the edge gives you a quick local comparison.
Shoreline evidence is rough and local. I pair it with the timestamped pool elevation and 24-hour trend. The number tells me how the reservoir reading changed; the bank shows what that change looks like at one place.

Make the same two-minute pause every time
- Check current weather, official readings and notices before leaving.
- Stand still and scan the entire route you can see, not only the ramp.
- Find the wind, traffic, debris and the most exposed water.
- Notice where you could get off the water if conditions change.
- Set the plan for the least-experienced person and the actual equipment.
- Agree on a turn-around trigger before anyone launches.
For practice, photograph the same safe stretch of shore on two different days. Compare texture, color, waterline and debris before checking the weather and lake data. You will quickly learn which observations travel well and which ones need more context.
